Grant Overview
Oklahoma's Christmas tree growers face significant barriers to accessing resources and information on best practices, pest management, and market trends. With 200 tree farms across the state, Oklahoma growers need a central database that offers actionable guidance to enhance their productivity and engagement in the industry. Unlike Texas applications, Oklahoma requires demonstration of extreme rural delivery capacity due to the presence of 23 frontier counties. Oklahoma's Rural Landscape shows that many rural areas where tree farms are located struggle with limited access to broadband, making online resources a particular challenge. Who Faces Barriers in Oklahoma? Tree growers in Oklahoma's rural areas face significant challenges in accessing resources and information. Many farms are located in areas with limited broadband access, making it difficult to access online resources. Funding will support the development of a central database that offers information on best practices, pest management, and market trends. By partnering with agricultural institutions, the project aims to create a comprehensive resource that farmers can easily access, enhancing their productivity and engagement in the industry. Key funding priorities include supporting rural tree farms and developing resources that are accessible to growers with limited internet access. With 70% of Oklahoma's tree farms located in rural counties with high poverty rates, this funding can help drive local economic activity. Oklahoma's tree farming industry is concentrated in the western part of the state, where the economy has been impacted by declines in traditional agricultural industries.
